The original Lady in the Veil sculpture, from the collection of the Flagler Museum, was created by the Italian sculptor E. Fiaschi during the late nineteenth century. The bust is characteristic of the many high quality marble sculptures produced in Italy during the Gilded Age, which Americans on the Grand Tour eagerly purchased as souvenirs. The motif of a veiled woman was especially popular, and the rendering of delicate fabrics, such as veils, was a demonstration of the sculptor's technical virtuosity. Fiaschi, an Italian sculptor working in Florence, was known for creating beautifully detailed figural sculptures representing women and children, perfect for display in domestic settings such as Whitehall's Music Room.
